Wagga State Juniors – report by Steve Dole

Beautiful weather greeted our juniors at the Wantabadgery for day 1 of the NSW State Road Championships. Illawarra started fantastically with young Gabriel Jakonsen taking the gold in the U9 ITT. Curtis Trkulja took some inspiration from that and grabbed the bronze in the U13 boys. In the U15 Women Amelia Trkulja road a great ITT and come away with silver, Sarah Cliff 6th and Emily Strumfin 12th. Disaster struck in the U15 men with Tane hitting the deck at the turn and Ryan having a mechanical sending both boys down the listing. In the U17 Women Tahlia Dole road her best ITT for the year to get the gold narrowly from Shari Heffernan with silver. In the U17 men Luke Britten 9th and Sam Estell 12th.
Into the afternoon and the wind picking up and clouds rolling in would mean some suffering in the road races. Gabriel backed up with another gold and Curtis another bronze to cap a great day for the young brigade. In the U15 women Amelia got a fantastic bronze, Sarah 6th and Emily 13th. Ryan bounced back well in the road race with a fantastic bronze and a bruised and battered Tane finishing with the main bunch.
In the U17 women Tahlia took the silver and Shari 5th. In the U17 men Sam had a great ride for 4th and his best result of the year and Luke battle home for 12th after having a mechanical.

Day 2

Quick update from the Juniors.
Gabriel Jakobsen made it 3 from 3 with gold in the U9 state crit.
Tahlia Dole gold in the U17 women and Shari Heffernan bronze.
Special mentions today Luke Britten 4th with a great ride and Sam Estell for going all the way in the breakaway.
Sarah Cliff putting the bunch in the hurt locker and Amelia Trkulja putting herself in the hurt locker (literally).
Great weekend for the kids, for some that’s it and for a few Nationals beckons.
