Illawarra Cycle Club

To see what events are coming up, you can check out the Illawarra Cycle Club’s calendar on Google and add it to your phone. The club has secured a new 8km race circuit on Mount Keira that’s safe for riders of all skill levels, with great viewing spots for spectators. Five races are planned for 2022, including a junior race. Roads will be closed to traffic from 1 pm on race day. These events align with Wollongong’s goal of promoting sport and active participation and will boost tourism and benefit local businesses. Additionally, a new 2km criterium track at the Unanderra Velodrome will be completed by the end of 2022. Week one is done. And what a week!
Not letting a little rain get in the way, racing was on, even in soggy (torrential) conditions.

Thanks to Garry for running the show (and looking after the point score), and special shout out to Chris Apps for packing up in the rain. The rest of everything was covered by Bernie, Naomi and Tilly. No podium photos for A and B Grade. It was just too wet.

First round of the Summer Omnium is happening this evening. It’s a Point Score!

How does it work?

During each race there will be dedicated sprint laps where riders accumulate points. The points are totalled over this race to give the final result.

The riders that finish in the top four will receive series points.

Clear as mud.

The race formats and point scores for the various grades are listed below.

E grade – 6 laps with a sprint every second lap: 2, 4, 6

D grade – 12 laps with a sprint every third lap: 3, 6, 9, 12

C grade – 16 laps with a sprint every fourth lap: 4, 8, 12, 16

B grade – 20 laps with a sprint every fourth lap: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20

A grade – 24 laps with a sprint every fourth lap: 2, 8, 12, 16, 20

Points will be awarded at each sprint: 5, 3, 2, 1

The top four riders in each grade will receive points towards the overall series: 5, 3, 2,1

So how does it work?
Three races, over three weeks. Each week there is a different style of racing. Week 1 is a points race, week 2 is a scratch race, week 3 is an elimination race. Points are awarded each week, and the overall winner receives a prize.

What is the prize?
The rider with the highest cumulative point score of each grade will win a bulk-size bag of killer pythons. Arguably the most sought after item on the club racing circuit.

Do you have to race every week?
You don’t have to race every week, you can register for just one or two of the races. But competing each week will give the best chance for you to rack up those points.

When does it start?
The first race of the series will be Thursday 15 October 2026. Weeks 2 and 3 will be on October 22 and 29. After the Omnium is finished, we will

First week of the Twilight Criteriums for this summer season. So good!

We’re slowly getting our body clocks back in order post daylight savings. Josh set up and packed up while Beatrice kept everyone in line at sign on. Sophie and Chris looked after first aid. Sophie made sure we had evidence of the podiums. And Garry was our Commissaire. Thanks team! 😊
